Side note: I found Powerbullet very difficult to work with. I made probably twenty versions of each of the first three assignments because everything that I would make wasn't functioning right. For example, in assignment two whenever I changed the gradient and tried to blend colors, that seemed to affect the animation. The animation just would not work and when I clicked Page- Preview it would not load correctly, and there would be no animation. When I would assign different start delays to different letters of my name, it would not work when I previewed, for no obvious reason. I had to keep adjusting the times to try to get it to work together, which eventually worked. This assignment should not have taken as long as it did but I found the program very unresponsive so it took much longer than necessary.

Getting started Work in Progress screenshots:

I couldn't figure out how to take screenshots on the Windows computer at first so I took these pictures on my phone then uploaded them. I figured it out for the above screenshots though.

Class 7, FINAL PREPARATION: Choosing a Java Script programming track

I first looked at the difference between Java and JavaScript on these sites before doing the 3 tutorials.

The first tutorial I did was Khan Academy. I liked their intro because it was very relatable and made programming seem like something really anyone could do. When I was in "Making an Awesome Program" the visual part of the code did not load the entire time, which made it much more difficult to understand. Though they talked about how blogging was something everyone can do, the explanations were not as clear as they could have been. Later on in Drawing Basics, the visuals worked and it was much easier to understand. Then in the coloring section the color just did not work again in the tutorial which was frustrating. When all of the parts did work together, I thought the tutorial was good and easy to follow.

Second, I went to LearnStreet to do the JavaScript course. It was very interesting to learn code in this way, using typing and responses to each right or wrong answer. I liked that there were hints on the side tailored to exactly what you were doing wrong if you needed help. It was more in depth and hard to follow at times, and I felt like it may have moved a little too fast. Between lessons 3 and 4 I felt almost like I missed something because I really was not sure what to do. It started out easy but seemed like it escalated programming to quickly for beginners like me.

Lastly, I did Codeacademy. I think it was a little easier after doing LearnStreet because it was the same kind of programming. This used numbers and signs to get information, while Khan Academy used numbers and signs to make shapes, which I thought was a very different experience. I liked that Codeacademy seemed made for super beginners and even gave some basic information about JavaScript and its functions. I liked how it gave you codes with little errors already printed and then you had to figure out how to make the work by changing them. I also liked in Codeacademy and LearnStreet how it was just textual and there was no video with a woman's voice telling you how to do things, which was just personal preference. It was very user-friendly and I liked Codeacademy a lot. If I had to choose one to use, I would chose Codeacademy (second choice Khan Academy, last LearnStreet).

Class 7 Assignment

2B: This is the stroke part, I used all three types of tools to make different shapes and gave them all different stroke options. In the stroke selection part I changed all of the options for every shape, using patters and solid colors throughout.

2C: This is the Paste Into section, I used two photos that I found on google images and pasted them into shapes, first an ellipses then a rectangle. I had to save the images and open them in Gimp, then copy the image from there and paste into the shapes. I added my name with the paintbrush tool.

2D: This was the transparency section where I made different shapes transparent. I created a New Layer and selected transparency for that, then added an ellipses, rectangle, and arrow shape. I then changed the opacity to be in the 60s to make those shapes show behind the picture. I then added my name with the text tool and that created a new layer, and I made that one's opacity lower also.

2E: This was the assignment I did playing with text. I first had the layer with my original image, and then added transparent layers. When I would start a text box it would create a new layer, so I would right click on that and click Merge Down so the text layer would merge with the transparent layer. I did that five times and used different fonts, sizes, colors and percent of opacity each time.

2F: This was the scaling assignment. For the first image I change the scaling from 164x164 to 82x82 to make it half the size it was originally. Then for the second one I unlocked the link between height and width and made the height in the 130s and width in the 50s to give it a different look.

Midterm #8

Final:

The bottom picture is a photo of my mother and I at the last BC football game that I edited in GIMP. I chose the photo because I had pretty dark circles under my eyes so I focused on editing those. In the progress shots you can see the close up versions which show the editing much more clearly. First I tried to use the blur tool and it just did not work. I tried clicking on different layers to edit, changing all the settings of the blur tool in the toolbox, and more but nothing worked. So basically I solely used the smudge tool, which worked very well. I smudged the smiled lines leading from my nose to mouth, and I smudged the circles under my eyes. When I smudged the circles it still looked dark, so I added some lighter color to the area with the dodge/burn tool. I then smudged that color in so it looked all blended together. I ended with just smudging my whole forehead to even all the color out. It is a midterm exercise from the Immersive Education course that I am taking at Boston College. Midterm #7

This is a photo of Chris Martin from Coldplay, that I edited in GIMP. I first took a square logo and cropped it into a circle. I then resized my image then resized the logo to fit well over the eyes in the picture. Then I added a black banner at the bottom by choosing the rectangular tool then fill with FG color, and added three different captions of different text font, size, and color. It is a midterm exercise from the Immersive Education course that I am taking at Boston College. Midterm #4

This is a greeting card I made in Cloud Party. I went to Cloud Party and took a picture of myself with the camera option in the cell phone. I then went to GIMP to add two text boxes and made them two different colors so they would stand out. It is a midterm exercise from the Immersive Education course that I am taking at Boston College. Class 6, Susan B Dollar (Word and GIMP)

10/16 Update: I focused originally more on the coloring and background/smaller features than the face, but after the end of class I realized we were supposed to draw the faces. This is Susan B on GIMP then Word. In GIMP I used the pencil tool to draw the face, using a dark gray and lighter gray on a gray background. In Word I used the freeform tool to draw the face, then changed the color and gradient of the line to gray and 1-2pt.

This is my coin made in Word, I changed the date, added Liberty, and added the stars that are on the Susan B. Anthony coin. Also I changed the size and placement of In God We Trust.

This is my Susan B. coin made in GIMP. I had much more trouble, I couldn't figure out how to get rid of previous text which was my biggest problem. I added the stars and changed the date and the placement of In God We Trust.
